First edition, first issue. The second issue, with additional text and plates, appears under the date 1769, but it was probably printed in about 1784, when the additional chapter (IV) of three leaves was printed separately; the second issue also contains 6 extra plates (pls 1-5 in ch. IV , plus plate 2B in chapter 3). This first volume was reprinted in 1821 in a considerably revised form and with 8 extra plates. The engravers of the fine plates include J. Mason, J. Basire, T. Miller, T. White, H. Sherlock, J. Gwyn and J. P. Lebas. This is the first part of the ‘Ionian Antiquities’, as the work is generally referred to, but the second and subsequent parts appeared under the title Antiquities of Ionia. The entire work, was the result of the two missions to Asia Minor sponsored by the Society. The first mission, under the direction of Richard Chandler, with the architect Nicholas Revett and the painter William Pars, took place between 1764 and 1766. Chandler has given us some account of the day-to-day experiences of the mission in his Travels, 1775-6. The second, headed by William Gell, with the architect John Gandy and Francis Bedford, was carried out from 1812 to 1813.
