First English edition, probably based on the Amsterdam edition of 1733-39. This work is sometimes catalogued under the name of Bernard Picart, the engraver of the plates. The original work was edited by J.B. Bernard and Bruzen de la Martiniere and published at Amsterdam in eleven volumes from 1723 to 1743; vols. 10 and 11 ‘Superstitions ancienne et moderne’ are by J.B. Thiers and P. Le Brun; they form an appendix to the ‘Ceremonies’.
