Second edition, second issue. The first issue of the second edition is dated 1865. Davesiès
de Pontès died in December, 1859. His widow arranged for the publication of a
number of his works. The Études first appeared in 1864, edited from the author’s manuscripts
and with a biographical notice by Paul Lacroix (‘P.L. Jacob’, also known as
‘bibliophile Jacob’). It includes ‘Itinéraire de Navarin à Messéne 1831’, ‘Nauplie et l’Argolid’,
and ‘Egypte en 1838’. The philhellene Davesiès de Pontès spent some years in
Greece and the Levant. From 1828-30 he sailed with the ‘Conquerant’ in Greek waters,
and he travelled in Greece in 1831 and 1833. He was in Egypt in 1838. His translation
of Byron’s Childe Harold appeared in 1862, and his Notes sur la Grèce in 1864.
