Third edition, first published in 1850 at Corfu and dedicated to Gladstone. The second edition appeared in 1851. A Greek translation appeared in 1859. Bowen was resident in Corfu for four years as president of the Ionian University. This third edition may have been issued in the wake of the Crimean War, or more probably with Bowen’s appointment as Chief Secretary of Government in the Ionian Islands in 1854. His topographical description of Ithaca is considered to have established its identity with the Homeric island.
