First and only edition. Only 250 copies were printed, as a memorial to Pendlebury who was killed in Crete in 1941. He studied at the British School of Archaeology in Athens, and in 1930 he worked at Tell-elAmarna as director of excavations. He was curator of excavations at Knossos in Crete, and his Archaeology of Crete, 1939, is a standard work. Pendlebury returned to Crete as a captain in the British Army and was killed there in 1941. The presentation inscription is signed by Pendlebury’s father. An exhibition to commemorate Pendlebury and the fall of Crete was held at the British School in 2001.
