First and apparently only edition, dedicated to Sir William Gell, whom Auldjo knew
in Naples where he was resident for some years. Auldjo made his name with his ascent
of Mt. Blanc, and he continued this tradition with Mt. Vesuvius. He was also a
friend of Bulwer Lytton and contributed to The Last Days of Pompeii. His Journal is
a lively account of several months’ visit to the Levant, with interesting descriptions of
all sorts of manufactures. The binding is contemporary, possibly made especially for
someone who collected voyages and travels and wanted a uniform binding for them,
or for a bookseller who specialized in the subject.
