Second edition, first published in 1869. In fact the original sheets of the first edition
have been reissued to form this second edition with a new preface dated 1874. The dedication
to King George I is dated 1870; the GL copy of the first edition is in a wrapper
dated 1871. The 1869 edition probably actually appeared in 1870. This very interesting
work was first published on the occasion of the Greek Government decision to reopen
the silver mines of Lavrion. Kordellas was the engineer appointed by the Government
to determine whether the ancient silver mines were still worth exploiting. The
double-page plates are especially interesting; they include a view of Lavrion and the
works, a tinted view of the works, a geological profile of Lavrion, and a view of the area
where the minerals were washed in large basins. The lithographed title contains a vignette
of the furnaces which is repeated on a separate plate. The large folding map depicts
the bay of Lavrion. This is Kordellas’s earliest work. He was a prolific writer on
mineralogy and related subjects, with many pamphlets on Lavrion and its products.
